Occupation and salary compliance

Review the actual role and pay against the applicable route and transitional rules.

Editorial check: 4 November 20263 min read

There is no universal Skilled Worker salary figure

Occupation eligibility, general thresholds, going rates, salary options and transitional provisions interact. Skill requirements relate to the work, and salary calculations depend on the relevant rules, hours and permitted components.

  • Write down the actual duties and why the selected occupation code fits them.
  • Record the applicable rule date, salary option and any transition relied upon.
  • Reconcile the CoS, contract, payroll and bank-payment evidence.

Review change before payroll implements it

Recommended practice: route salary reductions, changed hours, unpaid leave, location changes and material duty changes through sponsor review.

  • Flag deductions, allowances and irregular pay for specialist calculation review.
  • Check professional registration and minimum wage obligations separately.
  • Repeat the review for extensions or role changes instead of reusing an old approval.

Suggested role-and-pay review sheet

Ask the manager to describe a typical working week, the main responsibilities, required skills and how the role is supervised. Compare that account with the contract, recruitment material and occupation rationale. A title can stay unchanged while the actual work evolves. Record the reviewer, source version and reasons for the conclusion, including any point requiring specialist interpretation.

For pay, itemise the components and working hours instead of beginning with a single headline salary. Identify allowances, deductions, variable elements and contractual changes so the competent reviewer can apply the relevant calculation rules.

  • Keep the occupation rationale connected to evidence of actual duties.
  • Reconcile approved pay with payroll output and payment evidence for the same period.
  • Explain differences before carrying an earlier approval into an extension or change.

Suggested payroll exception review

Select a routine month and a month containing an adjustment. Check how payroll describes the change, who approved it and when the sponsor team became aware. A lower payment might reflect several possible events; establish the facts before assuming which immigration question it raises. Keep the payroll explanation and sponsor decision linked.

Review repeat exceptions at management level. Common themes such as late overtime corrections, inconsistent hours records or unexplained deductions may indicate a process weakness affecting more than the sampled case. Assign a wider review where appropriate and record the population considered.

Fictional practice scenario

A fictional engineering business gradually moves a sponsored employee into coordination tasks while keeping the original job title. A sample interview reveals the change, and a payroll review identifies a new allowance. The team records both issues for a fresh role-and-pay assessment.

The scenario illustrates why actual duties and pay components matter. It does not select an occupation code, determine salary eligibility or assume that a favourable total payment answers every route requirement.
