Permission to study and enrolment checks

Organise identity, digital status and arrival checks without confusing them with an employer’s right-to-work process.

Choose the correct official check

GOV.UK provides a general immigration-status service using a share code and date of birth. The service shows status and restrictions; separate services cover right to work and right to rent. Student sponsors should apply the permission-to-study requirements in their own sponsor guidance.

A share code alone is an access key, not a recorded conclusion. Design the enrolment workflow around the result of the appropriate official check and the decision it supports.

Suggested enrolment control

Create a queue for each intake showing whether a case is ready, awaiting evidence, awaiting specialist review or cleared for enrolment. Keep these operational states separate from any academic offer status. A student should not disappear from oversight simply because the course start date has passed.

Have a person review mismatches between the student record, identity evidence, course and status result. Explain to students which official service they should use and how to correct a problem. Avoid collecting unrelated personal data simply because it appears on a document.

  • Identify the student and match the official status result to the person.
  • Record the check date, the checker and the evidence reference.
  • Confirm the course and institution fit the permission being relied upon.
  • Resolve arrival-date or status discrepancies before treating the file as complete.
  • Schedule any future review needed for time-limited status or an unresolved application.
  • Reconcile the expected intake with actual enrolments and outstanding cases.

A useful exception register

For each unresolved case, record the missing fact, the decision owner, the next action and the evidence required to close it. Keep the original observation intact when a later check resolves the issue. A dated history is more useful than a final green tick with no explanation.

This site does not check immigration records or receive share codes. Use institution-approved systems for personal evidence and the linked official services for the actual check.
